Drüben hintern Dorfe
Steht ein Leiermann,
Und mit starren Fingern
Dreht, er was er kann.
Barfuss auf dem Eise
Wankt er hin und her,
Und sein kleiner Teller
Bleibt ihm immer leer.
Keiner mag ihn hören,
Keiner sieht ihn an,
Und die Hunde knurren
Um den alten Mann.
Und er lässt es gehen
Alles, wie es will,
Dreht, und seine Leier
Steht ihm nimmer still.

There, beyond the village,
Stands a hurdy-gurdy man,
And with his numb fingers,
He grinds as best as he can.
Barefoot on the ice
He staggers to and fro
But his little plate
Stays for ever empty.
No-one wants to hear him,
No-one spares a glance,
And all the dogs keep snarling
Around the poor old man.
And he lets things go by
All just as they will;
Grinding his hurdy-gurdy
That never stands still.
Strange old man,
Shall I come with you?
When I sing my songs,
Will you play your hurdy-gurdy too?
